Joe Biden Not Running for President

On Wednesday October 21, Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. gave the announcement he would not be a candidate in the 2016 Presidential Election. The announcement came 2 days after an article stated he would release his decision within 48 hours. In his announcement from the White House Rose Garden, he stated, “Unfortunately, I believe we’re out of time, the time necessary to mount a winning campaign for the nomination, but while I will not be a candidate, I will not be silent.” Many americans must be in shock. Lots of people are against Clinton’s proposals, and many believe Biden could have won if he had run.

Up until Tuesday night, Biden was still unaware of what exactly he would do. The previous failures of 1988 and 2008 still looming in his mind. According to the New York Times, Biden met with a group of advisers. Biden’s advisors came to the conclusion that he simply didn’t have the time to raise the total $70 million it would take to fund the campaign. They did say that if he gave up precious time to fundraise it could be doable, but Biden decided that wouldn’t be practical. He met again with advisors at his house on Tuesday night, and came to the conclusion he wouldn’t be running for president. He informed President Obama on Wednesday morning, and Obama set up a time on Wednesday for Biden to release to the U.S., his decision

In his speech, Biden also described what he would have done if he had ran. Like pushing for college education and child care and immigration. He also wanted to put an end to cancer, the disease that took his son Beau in May 2015. However, the most interesting thing Biden did in his speech was indirectly criticize Hillary Clinton. In the week previous to Biden’s announcement, the first Democratic debate took place (Note, Biden did not attend the debate.). In which, Hillary referred to the Republicans as “enemies”. “They are our opposition; they’re not out enemies.” said Biden concerning Clinton’s remarks. Biden also criticized Clinton’s foreign policy. He explained the problems with Clinton’s proposal of intervention in the Middle East. “The argument that we just have to do something when bad people do bad things isn’t good enough. It’s not a good enough reason for American intervention and to put our sons’ and daughters’ lives on the line, putting them at risk.” Biden stated on Wednesday. After Biden announced his decision, Clinton called Biden to tell him her admiration of him. Former President Bill Clinton talked to Biden and in a statement he said, “And I’m confident that history isn’t finished with Joe Biden.”

Since releasing the decision the polls suggest people are beginning to warm up to Clinton. Biden’s decision means that Hillary’s only other competitor for democratic nomination is Vermont Senator, Bernie Sanders. Despite Clinton’s poll numbers raise, Sanders welcomed Biden’s decision. The leading Republican candidate, Donald J. Trump, said “Personally, I would rather run against Hillary because her record is so bad.”

It seemed that Biden knew he most likely wouldn’t be running. He didn’t begin courting donors until September, and he wasn’t very serious about it. His advisers did say that there were lots of people to form the organization necessary for him, and all of his planning was not very coordinated. He did state that his family would be fine with him running again, so Biden might not be out of the White House for good. For now with Biden now out of the race, it looks no party can claim the top.
